The N.W.T. government says it is stepping in to bring down fuel prices in Norman Wells for home-heating fuel, diesel for vehicles and wholesale gasoline.

The community has been struggling with high costs of fuel and other goods after low water levels cancelled the yearly barge resupply and forced shipments to be delivered by air. The cost of flying in fuel added $3.38 per litre to the regular price of fuel in the community.

In a news release Friday, the territory announced that residents and businesses in Norman Wells can expect the wholesale cost of gasoline to decrease by about $0.75 per litre and the wholesale cost of diesel for vehicles and home heating to decrease by approximately $0.86 per litre. The change is expected to take effect as early as Saturday, though the announcement notes timing could vary from supplier to supplier.

The offset is in addition to a $1.8-million emergency fund the territory paid to businesses, Indigenous and community governments in the Sahtu and Beaufort Delta regions to offset transportation costs and a $150,000 donation to the Norman Wells food bank. [...]

A/N: Based on real events (meaning, yes, I actually bought these mini trains and they're adorable). I started picturing how the twins would react to these trains and that's how this happened.

"You bought what?!"

Tangerine had come back from the grocery store with some final ingredients for tonight's dinner. Lemon was joining the two of you tonight.

He found you sitting on the floor in the living room. You were surrounded by discarded plastic bags that had all been opened. There was another pile which appeared to be yet untouched.

"They're miniature trains!" You said, voice full of excitement as you picked one of them up from the coffee table next to you and holding it out to your boyfriend.

"Look!"

Tangerine was not impressed in the slightest. He narrowed his eyes at the train you were holding out. It was looked like sushi.

"Didn't know they had sushi trains."

"They don't, Tan, don't be ridiculous." You said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

"This is Diesel dressed as sushi, you can collected a bunch of them with different skins."

The deep frown on his face was adorable. He looked at you like you had grown another head.

"Why?"

You had no idea why you had bought the mini trains, they just looked so cute that you hadn't been able to resist them.

"Because... mini trains."

Tangerine chuckled at that.

"Can't believe I killed people only for you to buy some fuckin' miniature trains with that money."

"Lemon buys shit like this all the time." You recalled his special edition Thomas & friends train collection he showed you the first time you were at his place.

"Yeah, but I expected better from you."

You rolled your eyes at him and reached for another bag. Tangerine moved over to the kitchen, starting the preparations for dinner.

"Oh my god, this one smells like caramel popcorn, it's extra rare!" You shouted in excitement.

"Whatever you say, luv." He couldn't help the smile that formed on this face.

As much as Tangerine tried to be annoyed he found your enthusiasm over those stupid little things adorable. Lets just say he was staring more than actually cooking dinner.

Lemon had his own key to your place so neither of you had to get up to let him in.

"Hey guys- are those miniature trains?!" Lemon didn't even bother taking off his jacket or shoes before rushing over to you and the trains.

"Yeah, good to see you too, mate." Your boyfriend rolled his eyes at the lack of acknowledgement from his brother.

"Yeah, yeah... where'd ya get these?"

"Ordered them online it was a really good price, look this one's for you." You picked up one of the trains, which Lemon immediately recognized as Thomas, only this version had all kinds of different colors. Like a rainbow.

"He reminded me of you."

You handed the train over to him and before you know it, you were trapped in a bear hug with Lemon. You gotta admit though, he gives the best hugs.

"I love it, knew there was a reason Tan was keepin' ya around."

"Hey!" Tangerine shouted from the kitchen.

"I got one for you too, babe." You untangled yourself from Lemon's hug and reached for a another train.

"It's Gordon dressed as an astronaut." You showed it to Tangerine, but since he was in the kitchen and you in the living room, you were pretty sure he wouldn't be able to see it.

"The fuck am I supposed to do with a train dressed like a fuckin' astronaut?"

"Maybe put it on your bedside table? All you have there anyway are your cigarettes' and a book."

"I'll think about it."

And while that wasn't a lot, you considered his consideration a win anyway. For Tangerine that was a lot already.

"Are there more of these?" Lemon asked.

"Yeah, you can collect all of them." You said as you handed him the sheet on which all of the trains were displayed.

"Alright, where's your laptop? We're gonna get ya the complete set."

As you and Lemon rushed to find your laptop to buy more miniature trains, Tangerine took a break from chopping the vegetables and walked over to the coffee table.

For a moment all he did was stare at little train dressed as an astronaut. He gotta admit, it did look kinda cute.

He'd never told anyone but for a while when he was a kid he'd dreamed to someday go up to space. But that's all it had ever been. A dream. Tangerine shoved the thought back inside and picked up the train.

"Fuckin' Gordon.." he scoffed.

He stuffed it inside his jacket pocket never again leaving without it.

Right now, donated money is being used to help us survive this war. Food is very expensive and my family has to pay rent for the land that our tent is on. However, I want to save up enough money to evacuate my family to a safer place where we can rebuild our lives. I dream of returning to university to finish my computer science degree. I want to provide a better life for my family than is possible in Gaza. My family and I have many dreams we would like to fulfill after this war. Hello everybody.

"Hello, I am Farah. I want to tell you about my suffering from the beginning of the war from October 7th until today. We spent the first week in Gaza. During this short period, we were subjected to many threats of evacuation due to the bombing that took place near us. After that, we were displaced on October 13th to the south of Gaza, specifically in the Khan Yunis area. We were displaced in a place affiliated with UNRWA for a period of 3 months. We slept in a large number of people, 12 people, in a place 3 meters by 3 meters on a mat on the ground. There were no mattresses or headrests (pillows). We suffered from a lack of drinking water and pollution in the place, and overcrowding and crowding to use the bathroom. We waited an hour until we could use the bathroom.

We also suffered from the lack of meat or chicken, and all we ate was canned. Our children suffered from the lack of food for them, such as milk and eggs. We also suffered from the high prices of diapers and their lack of availability, to the point that the price of a pack of diapers ranged from $50 to $70. Despite the fact that it was a place affiliated with UNRWA, we were subjected to a siege for 10 days, and the Israeli army bombed the barracks and fired live bullets at the place. The place was evacuated..

Until now, the army has bombed areas near where we are in Al-Zawaida and we are suffering from hearing the sounds of explosions and clashes day and night. When we get sick and the children get sick, there is no treatment for us, no medicines, no hospitals, and my nephews and I suffer from skin allergies, toothaches, etc., and the scorching sun rays have caused us skin burns.

We also suffer from transportation and its high cost. We have started riding a cart pulled by an animal. People have started putting vegetable oil in their cars as fuel instead of gasoline and diesel, and this pollutes the air. Also, using firewood to cook food due to the lack of gas causes cancer, asthma, and difficulty breathing."

2024-12-19: Northeast Oregon (Hex 19)

Mountains seem to block the horizon in almost every direction, their peaks seeming to change shape as you travel. Weathered stretches of lava rock are visible here.

Notable Feature: Constructed Landmark

Two nearby rock faces bear wildly different art. One is a petroglyph of an indigenous trickster spirit whose image was painstakingly scratched into the rock. The other rock face is spray-painted with a message scrawled in large white letters: "FOR A GOOD TIME, GO AWAY!"

Hidden: The Garden Man

Despite the desert that makes up most of this hex, there is a curiously verdant parcel of land on an abandoned farmstead. Flowering vines creep over ground and structure alike, the vines staying green and the flowers staying red regardless of season or temperature. Dr. Andrew Brooks is a botanist who has spent several years trying to find this farmstead that was mentioned only on The Routes, and unfortunately, he won't be able to leave the farm.

There is something unusual here that doesn't play by the usual rules of reality or The Routes. Whispers come from the plants, occasionally saying coherent words as the leaves rustle in breezes that seem to be produced by the vines themselves instead of the usual source. Anyone who stays in the vicinity of this green space for longer than two weeks begins to sprout tendrils of plant matter from their skin which grow faster the closer they get to the edge of the green space and trap those who try to escape with deep taproots. Such is the fate that has befallen Dr. Brooks. Although he is alive and able to speak, he is rapidly becoming more plant than person.

Dr. Brooks asks those who are still able to leave the area to deliver a message to his family that he died, and also to deliver his research notes to the his colleagues at the University of Eastern Montana.

Hidden: The Tower Dweller

Intricate designs like those found in a zen garden are raked into the gravel surrounding an old rusting water tower. The tower is home to Pete Holladay, a long-haired artist who neither fits in with the hippies nor traditional society. The inside of the water tower has been transformed into a comfortable loft apartment. He is almost completely self-sufficient, walking 10-ish miles to the nearest town once a month to resupply. If the party is going to Idaho, Pete will ask for help tracking down some folks who stole a sculpture that he built in front of the tower.

Pete doesn't know who stole the sculpture, but knows the general description of the people and their vehicle. He saw them just as they were leaving with the sculpture, but since Pete doesn't have a car, he couldn't pursue them. The thieves were two caucasian men in a blue pickup truck with Idaho plates (here's a picture of what the license plates looked like in 1966). The vehicle's plate number is A 14546. Recovering the sculpture and/or bringing the thieves to justice will make Pete's tower available to stay in for free if the party is ever in the area.

Service Station: Blue Mountain Quick Stop

This service station looks like it was built from relatively flimsy materials. No vehicle service beyond fuel is offered here. Stenciled directly onto one side of the building is a sign that says "US NSF MONITOR SITE". A pair of fuel pumps, one for gasoline and one for diesel, are covered in dust and no longer function. Anyone who attempts to use the pumps will be greeted by a man in coveralls wearing a name tag and thick gloves. Roll 1d6 and consult the table below to see which man it is:

The attendant has 100 gallons each of gasoline and diesel in 5-gallon jerry cans. He will sell fuel for $1 per can, which is about half the usual price. People can also purchase the jerry can without any fuel in it for $1. The cans have an imprinted logo that reads "United States Army".

Anyone going inside the store will hear a sound that is somewhere between radio static and popcorn (geiger counter noise). You have probably not heard of the new Toyota HiLux Champ pickup. Probably because they don’t want you to know about it. “They” being the people who control the federal regulatory apparat, who don’t want you to know that people in other countries can buy a brand-new pick-up for $13,000 or so to start – something no American has been allowed to do (in America, at any rate) for more than 20 years.

And it’s more than just that. The ’24 HiLux Champ is a mid-sized pickup – not a compact. The latter was the last kind of truck you could buy here for around $13k or so brand-new, about 20 years ago.

You can guess why not – and it has nothing to do with “emissions.”

But hang on for just a second while we take a look at the truck you won’t be allowed to buy, if you’re stuck living in America.

The HiLux Champ is everything a truck used to be, beginning with affordable. It costs about half what you’d spend to buy the least-expensive new truck you’re allowed to buy in America – the Ford Maverick – which stickers for $23,920 to start. And unlike the Maverick – which looks like a truck – the Champ is a truck. Put another way, it isn’t based on a FWD/AWD layout (as the Maverick is) and it features body-on-frame construction rather than unibody construction, which is how almost all new cars are put together.

That means it’s tougher and simpler. Easier to fix – and less likely to break.

And it is affordable because it’s basic as it comes – which is how trucks used to come before a tag-team combo of government-mandated “safety” features that don’t make a vehicle less likely to crash (and in some cases, arguably, make them more likely to end up crashing) and a culture of living-beyond-our-means turned even “base” trim trucks into what would have been considered loaded trucks back when trucks were still trucks.

The HilLux Champ is like those trucks – the ones we used to be able to buy in America, some of them made by American companies. But that was a long time ago.

It is available in standard and long-wheelbase versions and with a diesel or either of two gas-burning four cylinder engines and a standard manual transmission – the latter once-upon-a-time being the standard transmission in pretty much every truck sold in America.

Ditto the regular cab – which has all but disappeared from the American truck market.

It even comes standard with AC – something that used to be optional in pretty much every truck sold in America back when trucks were still trucks and cost less rather than much more than cars, as they do now.

Just not climate-controlled, three-zone AC.

And just one air bag.

It also comes standard with configurability. Toyota designed it with pre-drilled attachment points to easily mount various types of beds, state kits, boxes – pretty much whatever the buyer would like to add to the truck. And Toyota will help the customer do that, by putting them in touch with aftermarket companies and suppliers that can help with that.

Instead of one-size-fits-all (and take-it-or-leave-it) and the price tag that comes along with it, here’s a truck that anyone who can afford a new motorcycle can afford to buy.

“Our ultimate goal,” says a Toyota spokesman, ” was to make this (vehicle) affordable and accessible. If people can afford their first car, which they can use to run a business and generate income, it will enhance their quality of life and provide new economic opportunities.“

It is unimaginable in America – what has become of America – because the American government is not interested in enhancing the quality of life of Americans – much less providing them with new economic opportunities made possible by their being able to afford a truck like the HiLux Champ. The government that rules Americans wants Americans to be endlessly struggling just to make ends meet, a goal that is achieved by making everything cost more than they can afford. Picture a gerbil wheel and you will have a sense of the plan.

The object being to prevent the accumulation of capital by average people, so that they never become capitalists. That being a threat to state capitalism – i.e., the ownership of essentially everything that matters by the government and the corporate lampreys that feed off of it.

This is achieved by arranging things in such a way that most people spend whatever they earn just to keep up with their debts. This serves the corollary interests of the government and the financial system that bought the government more than 100 years ago (if you’re interested in learning more about that, Edward Griffin’s Creature from Jekyll Island is an excellent primer).

And that is why Americans aren’t allowed to buy a $13k pick-up like the HiLux Champ.

Not because of “emissions” – which are just another bogey. The Champ’s engines do not pollute. But they aren’t compliant – with the very latest American emissions standards, which is not the same thing (or even in the same ballpark) as “polluting.” The Champ meets “Euro5” emissions standards, which allow for almost no emissions. But that is not good enough for the American regulatory apparat, which uses the pretext of “emissions” and the lie that trucks such as the HiLux Champ “pollute” to keep them out of the hands of American buyers.

So as to assure that American buyers aren’t able to buy – as opposed to endlessly make payments on – a truck like the Champ that they might be able to pay for in cash. Or pay off in a year or two.

And so be able to accumulate capital (wealth) rather than live hand-to-mouth.

And there you have it.

Or – rather – there you can’t have it. And now you know what – and why.

Chasing in style! por Kevin Madore Por Flickr: With the White Pass Rotary Fleet stopped right squarely across the Klondike Highway crossing behind me, our photo chase train creeps slowly into Log Cabin to pick us up and take us to the rotary finale at Bennett. Folks who have been to the White Pass & Yukon are probably familiar with the fact that this line is tough to chase. Yes, there are a few stretches that can be seen from the Klondike Highway, but they are darn few in number. To get photos of trains on this railroad, you need to chase with a train. For each of the 4 days of the 2011 Rotary Run, the White Pass & Yukon provided us with a 5-car chase train, powered by 2 of the iconic 90-class diesel locomotives. Each day, both the locomotives and the consist were different pieces, and everything was immaculately clean. The locomotives had recently been completely rebuilt and repainted, so as diesels go, they were pretty photogenic. We were allowed to ride the platforms and with 5 cars and only 17 photographers, there was plenty of room to spread out. The railroad also provided several White Pass historians to accompany us, answering our many questions and providing expert commentary on everything from operations to the awesome scenery. Of course, food was also provided. During lengthy plowing operations at White Pass, the train provided a handy place to sit down, relax and have some refreshments. Having seen all of my photos of the Rotary Fleet, and now the chase train, one might be inclined to believe that this little "charter" had an eye-watering price tag, but such was not the case. The railroad financed the entire rotary operation as a training exercise. All we paid for was the train you see here. Of note for the 90-Class fans is the famous "Thunderbird" painting that you see on the nose of each of these locomotives. While I didn't have the time to compare them, I am told by the White Pass mechanical staff that while they all look alike from a distance, each one is actually unique.

I get it, anon. I truly do. When I was a kid, it was included in so many sermons. It was held up as an example of the disrespect of the secular world and of "degenerate art." I wanted to see their power crack, to be free of their control. And to hurt them back, bc sometimes the wounded lash out.

But I was wrong. Does it have that effect? Of course. Is that the point of the piece? No. The artist created it from a place of belief. It was intended to be Christian art.

It asks questions that are worth asking.

Is that small, mass-produced plastic crucifix a holy object? It's a piece of plastic, shaped and dyed overseas by ppl who were likely not believers. Does that matter? At what point between assembly line and bookstore shelf does it become more than a piece of plastic?

Is it the image it's formed into? How much authority does that give it? Has the image been elevated to something near (if not directly) idolatry? Is it as important as faith? Is it more important?

Is that what faith is? A little plastic crucifix to put on the wall? Something with a price tag? Something simple and easy? Something to set this particular household, this family, apart from the heathens next door?

Is it an expression, or a performance? Do we know the difference?

Why is this little plastic crucifix something to be protected, while children eat cross-shaped chocolates at Easter? While you throw forgotten drawings of the crosses on the hill into the trash when Sunday school is over? While we print it on t-shirts to wear to Wal-Mart, on bumper stickers to fade and peel off? On tracts to be crumpled in pockets and dropped on the ground? What makes the treatment of this image, in this situation, different from the way it's treated by other believers?

Was Jesus' physical body also holy? Are you prepared to think of him as a man who picked food from between his teeth, and pissed, and got BO and morning wood? Is being in a body so shameful that you can't accept his body as it was? Is the idea of perfection so important that rejecting him as a man is justified? Is that what faith is?

How many believers have insisted that they would kneel at the cross? Would they, really? Could a person who can't handle a photograph stand to kneel in the mud made from his sweat, blood and piss? Could a person who collects sterile plastic crucifixes stomach the smell? Could a modern believer watch a man die, screaming blasphemy while speedrunning the stages of grief?

Are those ppl - the dirty and ugly and needy and angry and dying and blasphemous - "the least of these"? If not them, then who? If not them, then why?

How many, who would right now be claiming that their faith is strong enough to do that, have no idea wtf they're promising? How many pay a nurse to bathe their elderly parents? How many cross the street to avoid ppl who haven't bathed in a while? How many look down on ppl who sweat for a living, who do the unglamorous work, who can never quite get the smell of diesel or fryer oil off of their hands? How many expect others to cover up scars, birthmarks, deformities, disabilities and illnesses? How many are impatient with those who need help, who are living inside of their pain, who blame god?

The piece is uncomfortable bc it juxtaposes something clean and convenient with something gross and messy. It's uncomfortable, so ppl sent the artist death threats. It's uncomfortable, so ppl committed vandalism in museums. It's uncomfortable, so ppl printed off copies of it to burn in effigy.

Is that what faith is?

It is a well-known fact that ONLY RICH city dwellers who do not have to travel long distances and who can afford to charge their car at home or in the office can actually buy and use electric cars. More and more, especially in rural areas, I come across people who openly say that their old trusty diesel (it works in cold winter and hot summer and no worries to travel - 600 miles on a single tank of fuel.) will only be taken from their dead hands by the stupid government and the greedy rich...

Most "cheap" EVs can't go even 170 miles in real road conditions without a problems. This is one of the reasons why, as an electric car technology enthusiast, I resisted the legacy car manufacturer ads (You know this nonsense: average driver's daily trips are short...! But, what about long trips and unreliable chargers!???). I didn't buy their really overpriced "cheap" short-range EVs...These "legacy" electric cars are definitely NOT "cheap or affordable" and in many cases they are not practical for longer journeys, especially if charging stations are rare and unreliable...

In Europe, one of the cheapest and easiest "petrol" cars to buy, the Dacia Sandero Stepway (Bare bones price tag -14590 € in Latvia) easily outperforms any electric car over a long distance trips, besides, it costs at least 2x cheaper than "cheap" EVs, and for this price difference you can buy a huge tank of gasoline, which is enough for all the fossil fuel car for its life, and no worries about "charger anxiety"...! Plus, this fossil fuel car is still pretty basic by today's standards and won't break the bank to repair. This also explains why the Dacia brand is becoming popular among practical, rational and frugal motorists in Europe...
